Prep Hockey Program
Our Smoky Mountain Prep program is considered the first step to playing travel hockey. It gives players a taste of what travel hockey is like. Prep is for the more experienced players looking for a higher level of competition and players are selected based on tryouts.
2025 Prep Tryout Schedule
10U - Sunday June 8th @ 3:00 - 3:50 pm
12U - Sunday June 8th @ 4:00 - 4:50 pm
14U - Sunday June 8th @ 5:00 - 5:50 pm
Ages
It is the intention of KAHA Prep Hockey Program to ice a Prep team at each age group (8U-14U).
Final determination will be made based on the interest and skill level to support Prep teams.
When
The Prep season typically starts August and goes until mid-March.
Note: 10U teams have a MANDATORY leveling tournament August 16-17th in Huntsville, AL.
Where
Prep teams offer our players the opportunity to compete against other teams in our geographic area (AL, GA, IN, KY, OH, MS, NC, SC, TN).
Practices
Most all practices are held at Cool Sports located off of Watt Road in Knoxville, TN.
Practices are typically Weekly during the Fall / Winter Rec season.
10U -14U teams will have a High-Powered Weekend over Labor Day Weekend.
LEAGUE PLAY
Our Prep teams (10U -14U) play in the Southern Youth Travel Hockey League (SYTHL) in the A2 division.
Our 8U Prep team will play an independent tournament and friendly game schedule from October - March.
Games / Tournaments
SYTHL league affiliations ( 5 league weekends -1 host 4 travel). Additional weekend for teams that qualify for the SYTHL Championship Weekend
Teams typically schedule two to three out-of-town tournaments a season.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Participation in the Prep Hockey program requires MANDATORY Rec league participation. Prep Hockey program is an add-on to Rec league.
Extra Costs
ALL 2024-2025 Smoky Mountain Wild PREP player apparel is the same as last season EXCEPT practice jerseys & socks.
Required New PREP Player Gear:
- Home Jersey & Socks
- Away Jersey & Socks
- Shell
- Team track Suit (Green 1/4 zip & joggers)
- Team shirt & shorts (Blue)
- Practice Jersey
- Practice socks

Additional Information
2025-2026
KAHA recommend the Prep Program for any player enrolled in Rec/House programs who want additional program options, practices and out of town games.
You will need an active USA Hockey registration number to sign-up and attend the tryout. You can check the status of your registration number by clicking here.
Participation in the prep program requires mandatory rec league sign up. Prep is an add-on to rec league.
The tryout fee for the 2025-2026 prep season is $30.00. If you have previously tried out for the travel program, there is no additional select cost.
Teams will be selected based on evaluations by the hockey director and head coach.
Participation in the tryout, or a previously arranged evaluation, is mandatory for being considered for a team roster spot.
